Roundabouts are a category of circular intersections or junctions in which traffic moves in a single direction around a central median. Priority is given to traffic already in the roundabout and studies have shown that roundabouts are safer than traditional stop sign or signal-controlled crossings. Integral to effective design of roundabouts is ensuring turning paths that result in uniform operating speeds of about 20 miles per hour.
